Automeris illustris is a species of moth belonging to the Saturniidae family, order Lepidoptera. While primarily known in academic circles for its morphology, this insect is recognized as a potential pest in agricultural and forestry ecosystems in South America. The larvae of this species are notorious for their voracious appetite and distinct physical defensive structures.

As a polyphagous pest, the larvae of Automeris illustris attack a variety of host plants, including diverse fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. Their feeding behavior is indiscriminate, often focusing on the foliage, which is essential for the tree's metabolic health. Significant outbreaks can lead to rapid canopy depletion, weakening the host plants and resulting in decreased crop quality and yield.

The life cycle encompasses four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Repeated attacks over several seasons can severely compromise the vitality of orchard plantations.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the recommended approach to minimize the impact of Automeris illustris on agricultural production. The strategy involves:
