Axis deer

Axis

Description

The Axis deer (scientific name: Axis axis), also known as the chital, belongs to the family Cervidae and the order Artiodactyla. While originally native to the Indian subcontinent, it has become an invasive species in various parts of the world, where it poses a significant threat to commercial agriculture and forestry.

These animals feed on a wide variety of plant species, causing severe damage to cereal crops, vegetables, legumes, and orchard plantations. Due to their tendency to feed in large groups, they can devastate entire fields in a very short period of time, leading to significant economic losses for farmers.

The biology of the Axis deer is characterized by a high reproductive rate and the absence of a distinct breeding season. This allows populations to grow rapidly, especially in environments where food is abundant and natural predators are absent. Their social structure enables efficient foraging across large areas.

The extent of damage is multifaceted, involving the consumption of crops, the trampling of seedlings, and the stripping of bark from young trees, which often leads to the death of the plants. Furthermore, their presence on pastures creates intense competition with livestock for grazing resources, reducing the overall productivity of the farm.

To mitigate the impact of Axis deer on agricultural land, farmers use several strategies:

  • Installation of high-tensile wire fences or mesh barriers exceeding 2 meters in height.
  • Deployment of acoustic, visual, and electronic scaring devices around fields.
  • Application of chemical or organic repellents around the perimeter of crop zones.
  • Cooperation with local wildlife management authorities to control and monitor population density.
