Description
The elk (Cervus canadensis), belonging to the order Artiodactyla and the family Cervidae, is a large herbivore that poses a significant challenge to agricultural productivity. While native to various ecosystems, its expansion into farming regions often results in substantial economic losses due to intensive grazing and habitat encroachment.
Elk frequently damage a variety of crops, including winter wheat, alfalfa, soybeans, and corn. In addition to field crops, they pose a severe threat to nurseries and orchards, where they browse on tender shoots and strip bark from fruit trees, which can kill young saplings and stunt the growth of mature orchards.

In winter, they often congregate near hay stores or woody vegetation, causing localized and intensive destruction of agricultural assets in a very short amount of time.
Damage caused by elk is categorized by heavy consumption of forage, mechanical damage through trampling, and the physical degradation of trees. This behavior leads to reduced crop yields, poor plant stand quality, and increased veterinary or chemical costs if the damage introduces opportunistic pests or diseases.
Effective management requires a combination of physical barriers and behavioral deterrence:
