Aylax

Description

Systematic position and classification
Aylax is a genus of small insects within the order Hymenoptera, belonging to the family Cynipidae, commonly known as gall wasps. These insects are highly specialized phytophages that induce the formation of pathological tissue growths on host plants, known as galls. In an agronomic context, they are recognized as specific pests that target various species of the Papaveraceae family.

Host crops and susceptibility
The primary host for this pest is the opium and oilseed poppy (Papaver somniferum). The insect attacks the reproductive organs of the plant, which directly impacts seed formation and crop quality. Occasionally, they can also be found on wild poppy relatives, which serve as natural reservoirs for the pest population between growing seasons.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle of Aylax is closely synchronized with the phenology of the poppy plant. Adult females lay eggs into the tissues of the developing ovary or pedicels. Upon hatching, the larvae trigger the formation of a gall, which provides them with both nutrition and protection from environmental stress. Completing their development within this gall, they eventually emerge as adults to restart the cycle, often coinciding with specific poppy growth stages.

Nature of damage and economic impact
The feeding activity of Aylax larvae causes significant deformation of the poppy capsules and disrupts the normal physiological development of the plant. This leads to reduced seed weight, lower oil content, and a general decrease in yield. In cases of severe infestation, the damage to the reproductive structures makes the harvest commercially non-viable, posing a significant risk to growers.

Protection and control measures
Effective management of Aylax requires an integrated approach to minimize population levels:

  • Implementation of crop rotation and spatial isolation from wild poppy populations.
  • Deep tillage and plowing post-harvest to destroy overwintering sites in the soil.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of crop residues to reduce the pest's overwintering survival rate.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight period of adult wasps to disrupt the egg-laying process.
