Fir seed moth

Barbara herrichiana

Description

The Fir seed moth (Barbara herrichiana) is a destructive pest of coniferous trees belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This moth primarily impacts the reproductive structures of the fir tree, causing significant losses in seed production, which is a major concern for both commercial forestry and conservation seed orchards.

The larvae feed exclusively inside the cones of various fir species. By tunneling through the scales and feeding on developing seeds, they render the cones infertile and unusable for silvicultural purposes. The impact is particularly devastating in seed orchards where high-quality seed is the primary objective of management.

The life cycle of the moth is closely tied to the phenology of the host plant. Adults emerge in spring, coinciding with the flowering period of fir trees. Females lay eggs on young cones. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the cone, creating galleries. They consume the internal tissues, disrupting the maturation process and often causing the cone to die or deform before the seeds are released.

Damage is often visible through the presence of frass (larval excrement) and resin discharge near the entry holes on the surface of the cone. Affected cones typically appear stunted, distorted, or brown, and they may fall from the branches prematurely. Inside the cone, the larva grows through several instars before pupating.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

  • Monitoring adult flight periods using pheromone traps to determine the timing for intervention.
  • Sanitation practices, such as the manual removal and destruction of infested cones during the winter months to reduce the overwintering population.
  • Application of targeted insecticides during the vulnerable stage when neonate larvae are moving across the surface before entering the cone.
  • Promoting biological control by conserving natural predators and parasitoids that reduce larval survival rates.
