Description

The Constricted bush-cricket (Barbitistes constrictus) is a species of insect belonging to the family Tettigoniidae. It is characterized by its distinctively shaped wings in males and a cryptic green or brownish coloration. While typically found in natural habitats, it can become an occasional pest in orchards and private gardens when population densities spike.

This species primarily targets fruit-bearing trees and shrubs. It is known to feed on the foliage of apple, pear, and plum trees, as well as various berry bushes. In cases of high infestation, the impact is significant, as the insects move systematically through the canopy, consuming fresh leaf tissue and young buds.

The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with females depositing eggs into crevices of bark or plant stems. Larvae emerge in the spring, feeding voraciously as they develop. By mid-summer, the insects mature into adults, ready to reproduce and repeat the cycle.

Damage caused by this pest includes irregular holes in leaves, partial or complete skeletonization of foliage, and damage to reproductive buds. Such damage reduces the plant's vigor, lowers photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately leads to decreased yields and poor fruit quality in commercial and domestic settings.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and physical intervention. Horticultural practices such as removing infested plant debris and pruning affected branches can reduce egg-laying sites. When economic damage thresholds are exceeded, the application of targeted insecticides, carefully timed to the larval stage, provides the most reliable control method.
