Description
Systematic position. Barbitistes obtusus belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae (bush-crickets). This insect species is recognized as a potential pest in agricultural landscapes, particularly within temperate climate zones where it can exert significant pressure on specialty crops.
Crops damaged. The primary targets of this pest include grapevines and various deciduous fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum. Occasionally, it may also attack forest trees or ornamental shrubs when its preferred host plants are in close proximity to wooded areas.
Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes hemimetabolous development. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs usually laid in bark crevices, stems, or soil. Nymphs emerge in spring and undergo several molting stages while feeding voraciously on succulent green parts of plants. Adults reach maturity in mid-summer and remain active until late autumn.
