Yersin's bush-cricket
Barbitistes yersini
Description
Yersin's bush-cricket (Barbitistes yersini) is an insect species belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae. While often considered a typical inhabitant of shrubs and forest edges, it can reach high population densities, leading to significant damage in agricultural and horticultural settings.
This pest targets a variety of deciduous trees and shrubs. It is known to feed on the foliage of fruit trees, including apples, pears, and stone fruits. By consuming leaves and young shoots, the bush-cricket can severely hinder the vegetative development of young trees and affect the health of mature orchards.
The life cycle of the species involves incomplete metamorphosis. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs usually deposited in bark crevices or woody tissues. Larvae emerge in the spring and undergo several molts. As they develop, their voracious appetite grows, leading to more pronounced feeding damage throughout the summer season.
The damage is characterized by irregular, skeletonizing feeding patterns on leaves. In severe infestations, the insects may consume almost all leaf tissue, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic area of the tree. This physiological stress can lead to reduced fruit set, weakened branches, and an increased susceptibility to secondary infections.
Management strategies focus on early detection and physical or chemical control. Regular scouting of orchards during the spring helps identify infestations before they become critical. If chemical intervention is necessary, targeted application of appropriate insecticides during the early larval stages is most effective. Maintaining a healthy ecosystem with natural predators is also a key preventive measure.
- Regular monitoring of foliage in spring
- Targeted insecticide applications for larvae
- Bark cleaning to remove egg-laying sites
- Encouraging natural bird populations in the orchard
