Batocera boisduvali

Batocera boisduvali is a species of longhorn beetle (family Cerambycidae) known as a significant wood-boring pest. These beetles are primarily found in tropical and subtropical climates where they target a variety of woody plants. As a xylem-feeding insect, the beetle poses a major risk to both commercial fruit orchards and ornamental garden landscapes.

The host range of this species is quite diverse, primarily affecting species like Ficus, mango, and various hardwood trees. The beetle prefers weakened or stressed trees, though in cases of high population density, it can also attack relatively healthy specimens. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which bore deep into the trunk and larger branches.

The biology of Batocera boisduvali is characterized by a prolonged larval stage that develops entirely within the tree's vascular system. The adult female deposits eggs into cracks in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the wood, consuming the inner tissues. The adult beetles are nocturnal and are known for causing additional damage by feeding on the tender bark of young shoots and twigs.

Visible damage symptoms include holes in the bark accompanied by frass (a mix of wood shavings and excrement). The internal tunneling disrupts the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients, leading to yellowing of leaves, branch dieback, and eventual tree mortality. In cases of severe infestation, the structural integrity of the tree is compromised, making it prone to wind damage.

Management of this pest requires an integrated approach to pest control. Effective strategies include:

• Rigorous monitoring and visual inspection of high-value trees for signs of frass or exit holes.
• Sanitation, which involves pruning and removing infested branches or entire trees to reduce the beetle population.
