Batocera davidis

Batocera davidis is a significant species of wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles, within the order Coleoptera. This insect is a notorious pest, primarily recognized for its ability to infest and devastate various hardwood trees, posing a severe threat to orchards and urban forestry plantations.

The beetle primarily targets a wide range of deciduous trees, including mulberry, fig, willow, and poplar species. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, as they tunnel extensively through the heartwood and sapwood. This internal activity disrupts the tree's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to canopy dieback and tree mortality.

The biological cycle of Batocera davidis is characterized by a multi-year development period depending on environmental temperature and host availability. Adult females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the tree. They spend the majority of their life cycle protected within the trunk, making them difficult to detect until substantial structural damage has already occurred.

Damage symptoms include distinct, large circular emergence holes on the bark and piles of frass (boring dust) at the base of the tree. The primary damage is the weakening of the tree structure, which can cause limbs to snap during high winds. Furthermore, these galleries provide entry points for secondary pathogens, accelerating the decay and decline of the infested host.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize damage. Key protective measures include:

• Strict monitoring for emergence holes and frass accumulations during the growing season.
• Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infested trees or branches.
• Application of systemic insecticides via trunk injection to target larvae inside the wood.
• Using light traps or attractants to capture adult beetles during their peak flight period.
