Horsfield's Longhorn Beetle

Systematic position. The Horsfield's longhorn beetle (Batocera horsfieldi) is a member of the Coleoptera order, specifically the Cerambycidae family. These beetles are notorious wood-boring insects (xylophages), known for their ability to significantly degrade the structural integrity of various tree species, often causing widespread damage in plantations.

Host plants. This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide array of host plants. Primary targets include fruit trees like apple, pear, and walnut, alongside forestry species such as poplar, willow, elm, and chestnut. Young saplings and trees already weakened by environmental factors are particularly susceptible to heavy infestation.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle typically spans one to two years, depending on the environmental climate. Adults are generally nocturnal, feeding on young bark and leaves. Females lay eggs individually into crevices in the tree bark. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the wood, where they spend most of their development cycle creating extensive galleries that weaken the host tree from the inside.

Nature of damage and pest impact. The primary economic damage is inflicted by the larvae, which destroy the cambium and sapwood layers. As they feed, they produce frass (boring dust) which is often visible at the base of the tree. This damage disrupts nutrient transport, leading to canopy thinning, branch dieback, reduced fruit yield, and ultimately the death of the tree if left untreated.

Control and protection measures. Managing this beetle is challenging due to the hidden larval stage, making early detection and preventive measures critical:

• Regular phytosanitary inspections of orchards and urban forests.
• Prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to limit population spread.
• Application of systemic insecticides targeted at the adult emergence period.
• Use of entomopathogenic fungi or nematodes injected into larval tunnels.
• Maintaining optimal tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization practices.
