Mango stem borer

The mango stem borer (Batocera rubus) is a dangerous member of the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae) within the order Coleoptera. This large wood-boring pest poses a significant threat to various tropical and subtropical plants, becoming a serious concern for international trade and local agriculture due to its ability to colonize new host species.

The pest primarily infests fruit trees and ornamental woody plants. Notable hosts include mango, fig, mulberry, durian, and various citrus species. Larvae cause devastating damage by boring deep galleries into the heartwood and sapwood, which disrupts nutrient transport and often leads to the decline and eventual death of the affected tree.

The life cycle begins when the female lays eggs in crevices of the bark, particularly targeting wounds or stressed areas. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the bark and begin feeding on the inner tissues. They spend several months developing within the wood, creating extensive tunnel networks before pupating inside the tree stem.

The larval stage is responsible for the majority of the damage. Common indicators of infestation include entry holes on the bark, accumulation of frass (sawdust-like excrement) at the base of the tree, and yellowing or wilting of the canopy. Heavily infested trees suffer from structural instability and are prone to breaking under high winds, creating hazards in residential and orchard environments.

Effective management requires strict quarantine protocols to prevent the spread of infested nursery stock. In established orchards, integrated pest management is crucial, including:

• Physical removal and destruction of infested branches or entire trees.
• Cleaning entry holes and injecting systemic insecticides directly into the larval galleries.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to improve resistance.
• Regular field monitoring to detect early signs of egg-laying or larval activity.
