Description
Systematic position. The tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aleyrodidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive agricultural pests, capable of causing significant economic losses in both open-field and greenhouse production systems.
Host plants. This species is highly polyphagous, attacking a vast array of crops. Primary hosts include vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and legumes, as well as various ornamental plants. Its ability to infest a diverse range of botanical families allows it to maintain populations throughout the year.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises an egg stage, four nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid on the underside of leaves. The duration of the life cycle is temperature-dependent; in warm greenhouse conditions, the insect can complete its development in as little as 15 to 20 days, facilitating rapid population buildup.
Damage and pest status. Direct damage occurs through sap-feeding, which stunts plant growth and reduces vigor. Indirect damage involves the secretion of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, obstructing photosynthesis. Most importantly, the tobacco whitefly is a primary vector for numerous plant viruses, most notably geminiviruses, which can devastate entire crops.
Control measures. Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. This includes the use of yellow sticky traps for monitoring, biological control agents (e.g., Encarsia formosa, Amblyseius swirskii), and maintaining strict sanitation protocols. Due to the insect's high capacity to develop resistance, rotating insecticides with different modes of action is essential when chemical intervention is necessary.
