The Cassava whitefly (Bemisia manihotis) is a destructive insect species categorized within the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is recognized as a primary pest of the cassava plant (Manihot esculenta) in several tropical regions, often causing significant economic losses to local agriculture.
The host range is primarily focused on cassava crops. The insect typically congregates on the abaxial (underside) surfaces of leaves to feed. Due to its specific adaptation to the host plant, the cassava whitefly can reach high population densities, especially during the peak growing season of the crop.
The life cycle of Bemisia manihotis consists of the egg, nymphal (crawler), pupal, and adult stages. Both nymphs and adults utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap. Warm, humid environmental conditions significantly accelerate their reproductive cycles, allowing for multiple generations per year.
Damage caused by this pest includes chlorosis, leaf deformation, and stunted plant growth, which directly reduces the yield and quality of the cassava tubers. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which prevents effective photosynthesis and can eventually lead to plant death in severe infestations.
Effective control strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key practices include the use of systemic insecticides, maintaining crop hygiene to remove alternative weed hosts, and deploying biological control agents such as parasitic wasps or predatory beetles. Additionally, planting resistant cassava varieties is considered the most sustainable long-term solution.
