The Nigerian whitefly (Bemisia nigeriensis) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is a highly adaptable species that poses a significant threat to global agriculture. Due to its biological characteristics, it is often studied alongside other major whitefly species for its economic impact on tropical and subtropical farming systems.
This pest exhibits polyphagous behavior, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. The primary crops damaged by Bemisia nigeriensis include vegetables, legumes, and industrial crops such as cassava, sweet potato, cotton, and tomatoes. Its ability to thrive in warm climates allows it to infest vast areas of farmland if not properly managed.
The biological cycle of the whitefly consists of eggs, several nymphal stages, and adults. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing the plant tissue and sucking the phloem sap.
