Description
The St. Mark's fly (genus Bibio) belongs to the Bibionidae family within the order Diptera. While these flies are often recognized as beneficial decomposers in natural environments, they can transition into agricultural pests when their populations reach high densities, particularly in cultivated soils rich in organic matter.
The primary hosts for these larvae include various vegetables, root crops, cereal seedlings, and nursery stock. They are particularly attracted to soils with high organic content, often thriving in fields treated with large amounts of manure or in undisturbed garden patches where moisture levels remain consistently high.
