Description
The March fly (Bibio femoralis) is a member of the Bibionidae family, belonging to the order Diptera. While these insects are commonly known as harmless nectar feeders in their adult stage, their larval stage is considered a significant soil-dwelling pest in both agricultural and horticultural settings.
The life cycle begins when females deposit large batches of eggs in moist, organic-rich soil. Upon hatching, the larvae, which are characteristically greyish-brown with dark heads, begin feeding on decaying organic matter. However, when population densities are high, they shift to feeding on the roots and underground stems of living plants.
The pest is known to cause damage to a variety of crops, particularly root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and sugar beets. They are also problematic in strawberry beds and may affect emerging seedlings by severing the roots, leading to reduced crop vigor, patches of stunted growth, or complete plant death.
