Description
The St. Mark's fly (Bibio ferruginatus) is a dipteran insect belonging to the family Bibionidae. While adult flies are commonly seen as harmless pollinators that emerge in spring, their larval stage is recognized in agriculture as a potential pest capable of damaging the root systems of various plants.
This pest affects a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. Major targets include cereals, potato tubers, vegetable seedlings, and ornamental plants. The larvae thrive in soils with high organic content, often concentrating in areas where fresh manure or leaf litter is abundant, which attracts female flies for egg-laying.
The life cycle typically consists of one generation per year. Females deposit eggs in the soil. Upon hatching, the larvae live communally in the earth, feeding on decaying matter but also on living plant roots when food sources are scarce.
