The oak apple gall wasp (Biorhiza pallida) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Cynipidae family. This small insect is widely recognized for its ability to induce the growth of complex plant structures known as galls on various parts of oak trees.
The primary host for this species is the pedunculate oak (Quercus robur). The pest typically targets young buds and twigs during the spring, although root-level gall formation is also a significant part of its complex developmental history.
The biology of Biorhiza pallida involves a fascinating heterogonic life cycle. It alternates between a wingless asexual generation, which emerges from the roots or soil, and a winged sexual generation, which develops within the galls formed on branches to facilitate further reproduction.
