Blastobasis

Blastobasis is a genus of moths belonging to the family Blastobasidae. These small insects are recognized as significant pests in both agricultural fields and storage facilities, where they feed on a variety of plant tissues and stored grain commodities.

The host range of Blastobasis is broad, affecting fruit crops, legume seeds, and diverse ornamental plants. The larvae are notorious for their cryptic feeding habits, as they often bore into seeds or fruit tissues, remaining hidden from predators and external environmental factors for most of their development.

The biological cycle of this pest involves complete metamorphosis. Adult moths are typically nocturnal, laying eggs near or on suitable host material. Once hatched, the larvae immediately seek entry points into the plant tissues, where they establish galleries and consume the internal contents, often spinning silk threads to secure their environment.

Damage caused by Blastobasis can be devastating to harvest quality. Infested seeds lose their viability, and fruits often show signs of internal decay and premature dropping. In warehouse settings, the presence of these larvae leads to significant economic losses due to weight reduction and contamination of the stored product with frass and webbing.
