Description

Systematic position. Blastobasis phycidella belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Blastobasidae. It is a small moth species that has recently gained significance as a potential pest in fruit orchards, requiring careful monitoring and management by agronomists.

Affected crops. The pest primarily targets pome and stone fruits, including apple, pear, and plum trees. It is also known to infest various nut-bearing trees, where larvae feed on both the fruit and, occasionally, the associated plant tissues in neglected environments or stored produce.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Blastobasis phycidella is closely synchronized with the development of the host fruit. Adults are nocturnal, and females typically lay eggs near the fruit calyx or in existing surface cracks. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the fruit to feed on the pulp.
