Description

The acorn moth (Blastobasis glandulella) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Blastobasidae. While often overlooked due to its small size, this moth is a significant threat to oak ecosystems, as it specifically targets the acorns of various oak species, compromising tree reproduction.

This pest primarily damages the acorns of species within the Quercus genus, including red and white oaks. The larvae are notorious for burrowing into the nuts and consuming the cotyledons, which makes the affected acorns completely unviable for germination and seedling production in forestry and nurseries.

The lifecycle begins with the adult moth laying eggs on the surface or near the cap of the acorn. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the interior of the nut. They undergo several developmental stages inside the fruit, feeding on the kernel. Depending on the conditions, pupation occurs either within the infested acorn or in the soil, allowing the insect to survive through dormant periods.

Infestation is usually identified by small, round holes on the acorn surface, often surrounded by granular frass (excrement). These holes create entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which cause the acorn to rot rapidly. The overall harmfulness is measured by the total loss of mast, which can devastate natural forest regeneration efforts in outbreak years.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling the acorn moth. Key strategies include the prompt collection and removal of infested acorns from forest floors and nursery grounds to break the pest's lifecycle. Insecticide applications may be utilized during the peak flight period of adult moths to prevent egg-laying. Regular monitoring using pheromone traps is the most effective way to determine the threshold for intervention.
