Blattisocius

Blattisocius is a genus of mites belonging to the family Ascidae (order Mesostigmata). While many mites in this family are predacious, members of this genus are well-known as serious pests of stored agricultural products, capable of causing significant quantitative and qualitative losses in grain, seeds, and processed food materials.

These mites predominantly infest stored cereal grains, pulses, oilseeds, flour, and dried fruits. They thrive in storage environments where high moisture levels and poor sanitation provide an ideal microclimate for rapid colonization. The presence of these mites is often linked to existing infestations of other stored-product insects.

The biology of Blattisocius is characterized by a rapid life cycle. Under favorable temperature and humidity conditions, they progress from egg to adult in a very short period. This high reproductive rate allows localized infestations to expand into major outbreaks throughout the entire warehouse if conditions remain unchecked.

The damage caused by Blattisocius is primarily directed at the germ of the seed, which they feed upon. This activity significantly reduces the germination potential of seeds and degrades the nutritional value of the grain. Furthermore, the accumulation of exuviae and excreta within the product leads to spoilage and hygiene issues.

Effective management requires proactive storage practices:

• Maintaining grain moisture content below 13% to inhibit mite development.
• Regular cleaning and sanitization of grain silos and transport containers.
• Monitoring temperatures to prevent heat spots in stored grain piles.
• Applying authorized chemical fumigants when threshold populations are exceeded.
