Blattisocius tarsalis is a predatory mite belonging to the order Mesostigmata and the family Ascidae. Unlike many other storage pests, it is primarily known for its role as a predator of other insects and mites found in stored agricultural products, yet its presence is considered a nuisance and a sign of poor storage conditions.
This mite infests various stored products, including stored grains, flour, seeds, dried fruits, and nuts. It thrives in environments where other storage pests, such as grain moths or beetles, are already present, as it actively hunts the eggs and larvae of these pests.
The biology and life cycle of the mite consist of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. In warm and moist environments, the life cycle is completed rapidly, leading to exponential population growth within a short timeframe.
