Blattisocius dendriticus

Blattisocius dendriticus is a mite species belonging to the family Ascidae. Often recognized for its predatory behavior in nature, it frequently emerges as a significant pest within grain storage facilities and warehouses. Its presence is typically associated with the accumulation of organic dust and food residues in environments that are not adequately maintained.

This mite infests a wide range of stored agricultural products, including cereal grains, oilseeds, flour, and dried food commodities. Because it thrives in environments with moderate to high humidity, it can quickly become established in bulk storage areas, causing contamination issues that affect the overall quality and marketability of the stored raw materials.

The life cycle of the mite includes egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under favorable conditions, particularly at temperatures between 20°C and 25°C and high relative humidity, the population increases exponentially. This rapid reproductive rate allows the mite to colonize large quantities of stored grain within a very short period of time.

The economic damage caused by Blattisocius dendriticus is multifaceted. Beyond direct consumption of the product, the infestation leads to the buildup of frass, exuviae (molted skins), and mite carcasses. This contamination imparts a musty odor to the commodity, promotes the growth of secondary fungi, and often leads to the total rejection of the stored material by food safety standards.

Effective management requires a comprehensive approach to warehouse hygiene and climate control. Reducing grain moisture content to safe levels (below 13-14%) is the most critical factor in inhibiting the survival of these mites. Regular cleaning of equipment, strict seal-tight management, and the occasional application of authorized fumigants are essential components of an integrated pest management program.
