Blattisocius triodons

Blattisocius triodons

Description

Blattisocius triodons belongs to the family Ascidae, order Mesostigmata. This species is a specialized mite often found in agricultural storage facilities, including grain elevators, flour mills, and seed warehouses. While many members of this family are predators, this particular species is frequently associated with the infestation of plant materials and stored agricultural products.

The primary crops at risk from this mite include cereals, legumes, oilseeds, flour, and various animal feeds. The pest prefers environments with high humidity and temperature, where it reproduces rapidly, entering packages and storage facilities through micro-cracks or via contaminated raw materials brought into the storage site.

The biology of the species is characterized by a rapid life cycle, which, under optimal conditions (temperatures above 20°C and high humidity), takes only a few weeks to complete. The mites undergo stages including egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. Females lay eggs directly into the substrate, ensuring quick population growth within the grain bulk.

The nature of the damage involves not only the direct consumption of the seed embryo, which reduces germination, but also the active contamination of products with fecal matter and webbing, leading to spoilage and a loss of market value. Additionally, the presence of mites promotes the growth of mold fungi, rendering the products unfit for human consumption or livestock feed.

To protect stored goods from Blattisocius triodons, it is essential to implement the following measures:

  • Maintain optimal storage conditions with humidity levels below 12-13% and stable, cool temperatures.
  • Perform regular sanitary cleaning and disinfection of storage facilities before new harvests are stored.
  • Use airtight packaging and modern aeration systems to prevent mite migration.
  • Employ professional fumigation and wet disinfestation of warehouse premises using registered chemical agents.
