Blepephaeus

Blepephaeus is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. These insects are classified within the subfamily Lamiinae and are known for their ability to thrive in woody environments. While primarily native to Asian regions, their impact on wood tissues makes them a subject of concern for forest health and agricultural biosecurity.

This pest affects a wide range of deciduous trees and shrubs. It is particularly notorious for damaging fruit trees, ornamental park trees, and various timber species. The beetles often select hosts that are already experiencing some form of physiological stress, though they are capable of infesting healthy trees when population densities are high.

The biological cycle of Blepephaeus involves a hidden larval stage that is highly destructive to the internal structure of the tree. Adult females typically deposit their eggs into crevices in the bark. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries that disrupt the vascular system and transport of nutrients throughout the tree.

The damage caused by this pest is often difficult to detect until the infestation is advanced. Visible symptoms include the presence of exit holes, piles of frass (boring dust) at the base of the trunk, and the premature wilting or yellowing of leaves. Severe infestations lead to structural instability, branch dieback, and, ultimately, the death of the host tree.

Management strategies focus on early detection and physical removal. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including the removal and destruction of infested wood, are essential to stop the spread of the beetles. Chemical control measures, such as trunk injections or surface application of systemic insecticides during the flight period, can be effective in reducing adult populations.
