Fig borer beetle

Blepephaeus succinctor

Description

Blepephaeus succinctor is a species of longhorn beetle within the Cerambycidae family, belonging to the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that primarily affects woody plants. Known in agricultural circles as a fig borer, this insect represents a critical threat to specialized nurseries and fruit orchards in its active regions.

The primary host for this pest is the common fig tree (Ficus carica). The insect targets the trunks and major branches, boring into the wood to feed. When left unchecked, the infestation can lead to significant economic loss, as the borer compromises the structural integrity and the vascular system of the fig trees, eventually leading to tree death.

The biological cycle of Blepephaeus succinctor involves egg-laying on the bark, followed by larval penetration into the wood. The larvae spend most of their life cycle inside the tree, excavating extensive galleries as they feed on the internal tissues. The pupal stage also occurs within the wood, and the adult beetles eventually emerge through round exit holes, leaving the tree weakened and susceptible.

Detection is often difficult in the early stages, as symptoms may be subtle. However, typical signs of damage include the presence of sawdust or frass at the base of the tree, yellowing and wilting of the foliage, and distinct exit holes on the bark. In many cases, the galleries created by the larvae cause the wood to decay, which invites secondary fungal infections and significantly reduces the crop yield.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. This includes strict cultural practices such as maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and watering, as well as the immediate removal of infested branches. Chemical control is effective when timed correctly to target adult beetles before they lay eggs, or by using systemic insecticides injected directly into the borer galleries to reach the larvae within the wood.
