Description
Bolitobius cingulatus is a species of rove beetle (family Staphylinidae) that can act as a pest in mycological settings. Unlike typical predatory rove beetles, this species has been associated with fungal substrates, where both larvae and adults can impact the quality of cultivated edible mushrooms.
The pest primarily affects environments where mushrooms like oyster or button mushrooms are cultivated. It thrives in high-humidity conditions with abundant organic material, frequently appearing in facilities that lack proper sanitation or where old, decomposing mushroom blocks are not removed promptly.
The lifecycle involves eggs laid within or near fungal tissues, followed by larvae that feed internally on the mushroom structure. Their presence is often detected by the appearance of tunnels and galleries within the stems and caps, which significantly degrades the commercial value of the crop.
Damage is characterized by widespread mining of the mushroom fruit bodies. Beyond physical damage, the beetles and their larvae act as vectors for various bacteria and secondary fungal pathogens, leading to rapid rot and decay of the produce, which can result in significant economic losses for growers.
Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include strictly maintaining hygiene in the cultivation room, ensuring proper ventilation, and applying rigorous cleaning protocols between cropping cycles. Utilizing fine-mesh netting on vents and removing all organic debris help disrupt the beetle's lifecycle and prevent infestation.
