Bonagota

Bonagota (Bonagota salubricola) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. Originally identified in South American fruit-growing regions, it has established itself as a major threat to commercial apple production due to its destructive feeding habits.

This pest exhibits a broad host range, primarily targeting pome fruits such as apples and pears. However, it is also known to infest various stone fruits, legumes, and even certain weed species, which allows the insect to sustain its population in diverse agricultural environments throughout the growing season.

The life cycle of Bonagota consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited in clusters on the foliage. The larvae, which are the primary destructive stage, progress through several instars. In temperate and tropical climates, the species can produce multiple generations annually, leading to overlapping life stages and sustained pressure on crops.

The damage caused by the larvae is distinct: they roll and tie leaves together with silk to create protective shelters. More importantly, they feed directly on the fruit, boring into the skin and flesh. This causes deep wounds, leading to premature fruit drop and making the remaining fruit susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections, significantly reducing marketability.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• Deploying pheromone traps to monitor population spikes and time interventions;
• Utilizing bio-rational insecticides, including Bacillus thuringiensis based products;
• Application of selective growth regulators that target larval development stages;
• Cultural practices such as sanitation, removal of infested fruit, and weed management to reduce shelter sites.
