The genus Boophilus (often classified under Rhipicephalus in recent taxonomy) belongs to the family Ixodidae. While these organisms are parasites of livestock rather than direct plant feeders, their presence is a major concern in agricultural management, as they cause significant economic losses in integrated farming systems through the transmission of diseases and physical harm to animals.
The biological cycle of Boophilus is characterized as a one-host life cycle. The entire development process, from larvae to adult ticks, occurs on a single host. After mating and blood-feeding, the engorged female drops to the ground to lay thousands of eggs in the environment, creating a continuous cycle of infestation on pastures.
The primary damage caused by these ticks is the transmission of protozoal diseases such as babesiosis and anaplasmosis, often referred to as tick fever.
