Description
Brachyleptura sanguinolenta, commonly referred to as the blood-red longhorn beetle, belongs to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. This species is widely distributed across the Palearctic region, occupying forest ecosystems where it primarily acts as a secondary pest, colonizing stressed, dying, or recently felled timber.
The primary hosts of this beetle are coniferous tree species, most notably spruce (Picea) and pine (Pinus). While adult beetles are frequently observed foraging on flowers and consuming pollen, the larval stage is responsible for the destructive activity within the timber, where they feed and develop beneath the bark and into the sapwood.
The life cycle of this longhorn beetle typically spans over two years. Females oviposit in bark crevices, and upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the wood. These galleries are characteristically packed with frass (wood dust), which compromises the integrity and economic value of the infested timber logs.
The beetle's economic impact is centered on the degradation of timber quality and the facilitation of fungal infections in the host tree. Although it rarely attacks healthy trees, it can build up large populations in neglected forest stands, particularly where there is an accumulation of storm-felled or diseased trees that provide ideal breeding sites.
