Albizia seed beetle

Bruchidius albizziae

Description

The Albizia seed beetle (Bruchidius albizziae) is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. This beetle is a specialist herbivore that primarily infests the seeds of Albizia species, notably the silk tree (Albizia julibrissin), which is a popular ornamental species in many regions.

The damage is caused by the larvae, which develop inside the seeds. The female beetles oviposit on the surface of developing pods. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the seeds, consuming the embryo and endosperm. This internal development makes the pest difficult to detect until the adult beetle emerges, leaving a distinct circular exit hole.

The lifecycle of Bruchidius albizziae is synchronized with the fruiting period of the host tree. Depending on local climatic conditions, the beetle can complete multiple generations within a single growing season. As temperatures rise, adult emergence increases, leading to a rapid buildup of the pest population within infested groves.

The economic and ecological impact of this pest is centered on the loss of seed viability. When the infestation rate is high, the vast majority of seeds produced by an individual tree may be destroyed, severely impacting natural recruitment and the ability of nurseries to propagate the species from local seed stocks.

Management strategies focus on mechanical removal and chemical intervention. Proper sanitation, involving the collection and destruction of fallen or infested pods, is the first step in population control. For seed storage, fumigation or cold treatment is necessary to kill larvae inside the seeds. While chemical sprays on adult trees are possible, they are often limited by the scale of the trees and environmental regulations.
