Pea weevil

The pea weevil (Bruchus pisorum) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. It is a highly specialized insect that targets pea crops during their reproductive stages. Importantly, the pea weevil does not damage crops such as onions, fodder beets, winter rapeseed, cabbage, bell peppers, watermelons, melons, or sunflowers.

The life cycle of the pea weevil is synchronized with the development of the pea plant. Adult beetles overwinter in storage facilities, barns, or protected areas in the field. Once peas start flowering, the beetles migrate to the fields to feed on pollen, which is essential for their sexual maturity. Females then deposit eggs on the surface of developing pea pods.

Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly through the pod wall into the developing seed. Inside the pea, the larva feeds on the cotyledons, creating a hollow chamber while keeping the seed coat intact. The larva undergoes metamorphosis inside the seed. By the time of harvest, the adult beetle emerges by cutting a circular exit hole through the seed coat.

The economic impact of the pea weevil is significant, often resulting in severe weight loss of the grain and reduced nutritional value. Infested seeds lose their viability, making them unsuitable for planting. Furthermore, the presence of larval waste and internal damage significantly lowers the marketability and food safety of the harvested pulse crop.

To manage and control the pea weevil, farmers should implement the following strategies:

• Sowing certified, weevil-free seeds to prevent initial infestation.
• Maintaining adequate spatial isolation from previous year's pea fields and storage sites.
• Early harvesting to prevent beetles from emerging and re-infesting the surroundings.
• Timely application of authorized insecticides during the early blooming stage before eggs are laid.
• Post-harvest processing including effective fumigation and cold storage of seeds to eliminate any dormant pests.
