Description
The alfalfa seed chalcid (Latin: Bruchophagus kolobovae) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Eurytomidae family. It is a highly specialized agricultural pest that targets the seeds of alfalfa, significantly reducing yield and quality in seed production fields.
This wasp primarily infests alfalfa plants. The pest is particularly devastating because the larvae develop within the seeds, remaining hidden from standard visual inspections until the emergence holes become visible in damaged or harvested seed lots, making infestation difficult to detect early on.
Regarding its biology, the insect typically overwinters as a larva inside infested seeds. In the spring, they pupate and emerge as adults. The timing of adult emergence is closely synchronized with the development of the alfalfa plant, specifically the formation of the pods, where females deposit their eggs through the pod wall into the developing seeds.
The damage caused is severe as the larva consumes the interior of the seed, leaving only an empty hull. This leads to substantial losses in seed germination rates and total yield. Heavy infestations can ruin a significant percentage of a harvest, creating major economic challenges for commercial growers.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize population growth:
- Elimination of volunteer alfalfa plants and weeds that serve as alternative hosts;
- Sanitation of fields post-harvest to reduce overwintering sites;
- Use of early-maturing varieties to escape peak chalcid populations;
- Application of appropriate insecticides at the bud stage to kill adults before egg-laying occurs.
