Systematic position and classification. Brumus octosignatus belongs to the family Coccinellidae (lady beetles), order Coleoptera. While members of this family are typically known as predators of aphids and other soft-bodied insects, this specific species has been documented in various agricultural regions as a potential phytophage capable of causing damage to crops.

Host crops. The pest is primarily associated with cereal crops, including wheat and barley, as well as alfalfa fields. When present in high numbers, the beetles are often found congregating on the ears of cereals during the grain-filling stage, which creates direct risk to the developing seeds.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult beetle is recognized by the eight distinct spots on its elytra, which provides its common name. The species typically overwinters in the soil or under plant debris, emerging in spring as soon as temperatures become favorable for mating and feeding.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The damage is primarily caused by adults feeding on plant generative organs. By consuming pollen and the soft tissues of the developing ovule, the beetle interferes with pollination and fertilization processes. This can result in shriveled kernels, reduced grain yield, and lower test weight, which significantly impacts the economic value of the harvest.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Brumus octosignatus while preserving beneficial insects:

• Regular field scouting to monitor population density during the flowering stage.
• Deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering sites and reduce the emerging population.
• Crop rotation to minimize the availability of host plants in consecutive seasons.
