Description
The Pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), belonging to the order Aphelenchida and family Aphelenchoididae, is a highly destructive microscopic parasite. It is the primary cause of pine wilt disease, which has caused significant economic losses in global forestry and decimated natural forest stands.
This nematode attacks a wide range of conifers, with species of the genus Pinus being the most susceptible. Other hosts include spruce, larch, and fir. The nematode colonizes the resin canals of the tree, destroying the epithelial cells and causing the xylem to cease water transport, which effectively chokes the tree.
The life cycle involves a complex relationship with the wood-boring beetles of the genus Monochamus. During the beetle's maturation feeding on healthy twigs, the nematodes migrate from the beetle into the tree. As the tree weakens, the nematodes reproduce rapidly, eventually reaching a stage where they move back into the pupal chambers of the beetles to be carried to new hosts.
The visible damage includes the cessation of resin flow, chlorosis (yellowing) of needles, and rapid wilting. Because the vascular system is blocked, the tree loses the ability to transport moisture, leading to tree death within a single growing season. Its high mortality rate makes it a critical concern for forest health worldwide.
Effective management relies heavily on strict phytosanitary regulations to prevent international spread through infested wood products. Management practices include the immediate removal and destruction (chipping or burning) of infested trees to eliminate breeding sites. Systematic monitoring using pheromone traps for vectors and the application of nematicides or systemic treatments are used in specific, high-value settings.
