Bursaphelenchus antoniae
Bursaphelenchus antoniae
Description
Bursaphelenchus antoniae is a microscopic plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. This species is a specialized phytoparasite closely associated with coniferous tree species. Unlike many free-living soil nematodes, this species leads a parasitic life within the woody tissues of stems and branches.
The primary hosts of this pest are coniferous trees, predominantly members of the genus Pinus (pine). The nematode colonizes the resin canals and the xylem, disrupting the physiological processes of the tree. Due to its cryptic lifestyle, detecting an infestation at an early stage is extremely difficult, which makes this pest a significant threat to forest ecosystems and commercial nurseries.
The biology and life cycle of Bursaphelenchus antoniae are inextricably linked to its vectors, the wood-boring beetles of the genus Monochamus. During their dispersal stage, the nematodes enter the tracheal system of the beetle, which transports them to healthy trees during maturation feeding. Once inside the tree, the nematodes reproduce rapidly, feeding on the epithelial cells of resin canals, which leads to sudden wilt of the host tree.
Common symptoms of infestation include a sharp decrease in resin flow, yellowing and shedding of needles, and branch dieback. The tree gradually loses turgor, making it highly susceptible to secondary pests. Mass reproduction of the nematodes leads to tree death within one or two seasons, and their rapid rate of spread creates a high risk of large-scale outbreaks in forested areas.
Protection measures include strict phytosanitary control over the movement of timber and conifer seedlings. In infested areas, it is essential to carry out sanitary logging with mandatory disposal of debris by burning or chipping. Furthermore, monitoring populations of vector beetles using pheromone traps is an effective method for reducing the risk of infestation spreading to new areas.
- Strict quarantine of wood products.
- Removal and destruction of symptomatic trees.
- Pheromone monitoring for vector beetles.
