It is a specialized wood-inhabiting nematode that requires a vector, typically wood-boring beetles of the genus Monochamus, to facilitate its dispersal between host trees.
The primary hosts for this nematode are various species of coniferous trees, particularly pines and spruces. Bursaphelenchus baujardi often colonizes trees that have been previously weakened by environmental stress or secondary infestation, acting as a significant contributor to the decline of forest stands in affected regions.
The biological cycle of the nematode is closely linked to its beetle host. The juvenile stages of the nematode migrate to the pupal chambers of the beetle. As the adult beetle emerges and flies to a healthy tree to feed on twigs, the nematodes exit the beetle's body through the tracheae, entering the tree's vascular system through feeding wounds.
