Description

Bursaphelenchus doui is a species of microscopic parasitic nematode belonging to the family Aphelenchoididae, order Aphelenchida. This organism acts as a specialized phytoparasite that shares a complex ecological relationship with wood-boring beetles, primarily those belonging to the Monochamus genus.

The primary hosts for this pest include various coniferous tree species, particularly those within the Pinus genus. While less aggressive than some of its relatives, this nematode species frequently colonizes stressed trees, contributing to the decline of forest health when environmental conditions favor the proliferation of its insect vectors.

The life cycle of this nematode is intimately tied to the development of sawyer beetles. The third-stage (dauer) larvae migrate into the pupal chambers of the beetles. Upon the emergence of the adult beetle, the nematodes disperse to healthy trees, entering the xylem through feeding wounds created by the beetle, where they continue their reproductive cycle.

The damage caused by Bursaphelenchus doui involves the degradation of epithelial cells in the resin canals. This results in the disruption of hydraulic conductance, leading to symptoms such as needle chlorosis, wilting, and in severe cases, the death of the host tree due to extensive vascular system damage.
