Bursaphelenchus fraudulentus is a microscopic nematode species belonging to the family Aphelenchoididae within the order Tylenchida. This pest is a significant concern for forestry due to its morphological similarity to the highly destructive pine wilt nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Accurate detection often requires specific molecular assays to distinguish this species from other closely related nematodes in the Bursaphelenchus genus.
The primary hosts of this nematode are various species of conifers, especially the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). While the nematode is primarily a mycophagous organism that feeds on fungi inhabiting dead or decaying wood, it can also exploit live plant tissues, particularly in trees that are already stressed by environmental factors or other pathogens.
The life cycle and dissemination of B. fraudulentus are closely associated with insect vectors, primarily wood-boring beetles of the genus Monochamus. During the insect's maturation feeding or oviposition on host trees, the nematodes, in their resistant dauer-larval stage, are transferred into the tree's wood tissues, where they begin to multiply and migrate through the resin ducts and tracheids.
The impact of this nematode on host plants involves the disruption of water transport and the degradation of ray parenchyma cells. Symptoms of infestation include chlorosis (yellowing of needles), drooping of branches, and overall crown thinning. Although considered less aggressive than the pine wilt nematode, it can still cause significant damage to the health and structural integrity of affected stands.
