Description

Systematic position: Bursaphelenchus fuchsi is a member of the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. These microscopic worms are known as specialized inhabitants of coniferous woody tissues, often exhibiting a close biological association with insects to facilitate their dispersal.

Affected crops: The primary hosts of this pest are various species of conifer trees. While not always the primary killer of healthy trees, it is frequently found within stressed or declining wood, where it acts as a secondary agent that exacerbates the health decline of the plant.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is essentially dependent on insect vectors, mainly cerambycid beetles. The nematodes enter the beetles during their developmental stages and are transported to new host trees during the insect's maturation feeding. Within the tree, they proliferate in the resin canals and parenchyma, utilizing both plant cell nutrients and associated fungi.

Nature of damage and pathogenicity: The damage caused by Bursaphelenchus fuchsi involves the disruption of sap flow and internal tissue necrosis. As the nematode population increases, the tree loses vigor, exhibits chlorosis, and shows signs of premature needle drop. The pest's feeding activity creates entry points for other fungal pathogens, accelerating wood decay.

Control measures: Management strategies focus primarily on silvicultural practices, including the removal and destruction of infested timber before the insect vectors emerge. Quarantining logs and implementing strict phytosanitary checks during international trade are crucial for limiting the spread of this nematode. Chemical applications are generally impractical in forestry settings.
