Bursaphelenchus hellenicus

Bursaphelenchus hellenicus is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Aphelenchoididae. Although it is less notorious than its relative, the pine wilt nematode, it remains a significant concern for forest pathology, particularly in Mediterranean and European coniferous forests where it impacts pine tree health.

The primary hosts for this nematode are various species of the genus Pinus. It is an endoparasite that colonizes the resin canals and wood tissues. In its natural environment, the nematode interacts with both the host tree and various fungi found within the woody tissue, which serve as an additional nutrient source during the nematode's development.

The life cycle of Bursaphelenchus hellenicus relies heavily on phoresy, where the nematode utilizes cerambycid beetles (genus Monochamus) as transport vectors. During the beetle's transition from larval to adult stage, the nematodes move into the insect's tracheal system. When the adult beetle feeds on the twigs of susceptible trees, the nematodes emerge and infiltrate the healthy or stressed host.

Damage caused by this nematode includes the degradation of internal vascular tissues, which restricts water and nutrient transport within the tree. Symptoms often mimic drought stress or other vascular diseases, including wilting, foliage discoloration, and branch mortality. Repeated infections can significantly decrease the tree's vigor, making it susceptible to other opportunistic wood-boring insects.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach focusing on forest hygiene. This involves the removal of dead, dying, or infested trees to reduce the beetle vector population. Implementing strict quarantine measures for the transport of pine timber is also crucial to prevent the accidental introduction of this nematode into non-infested geographic regions.
