Korean pine wood nematode

Systematic position: Bursaphelenchus koreanus is a nematode belonging to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. This microscopic roundworm is a highly specialized parasite that affects various coniferous species, primarily causing severe wilt and tree mortality.

Host plants and damage: The primary host for this species is the Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis). The nematode is considered a serious forest pest, as its infestation leads to the rapid physiological decline of the host tree, making the timber commercially worthless and causing significant ecological impact in infested areas.

Biology and life cycle: The nematode relies on wood-boring beetles of the genus Monochamus to disperse. The nematodes inhabit the beetle's tracheal system and are transmitted to healthy pine trees when the beetles feed on young shoots. Once inside the tree, the nematodes migrate to the wood vessels and multiply exponentially.

Symptoms of infestation: The characteristic signs of infection are the sudden yellowing and browning of needles, followed by a total cessation of resin production. In cross-sections of the wood, one can often observe signs of fungal activity that often accompanies the nematode invasion, further weakening the tree's vascular system.

Management strategies: Controlling Bursaphelenchus koreanus requires strict phytosanitary regulations. The most effective approach involves the rapid removal and destruction of symptomatic trees to eliminate breeding sites. Additionally, managing the beetle vector population through systemic insecticides and pheromone traps is essential for prevention.
