This organism is classified as an important pest in forestry, closely related to the well-known pine wilt nematode, capable of causing significant damage to various conifer species.
The primary hosts for this pest include coniferous trees from the family Cupressaceae, specifically the genus Chamaecyparis. The nematode relies on insect vectors, primarily wood-boring beetles of the genus Monochamus, to facilitate its dispersal from infected trees to healthy hosts, entering through feeding wounds or natural openings in the bark.
The biology of Bursaphelenchus luxuriosae is characterized by a rapid reproductive cycle. Within the host tree, the nematodes colonize the resin canals, feeding on the epithelial cells and fungi present in the wood. This rapid proliferation allows the population to reach high densities, effectively disrupting the tree's physiological functions within a short timeframe.
Damage caused by these nematodes is severe. By obstructing the water-conducting tissues of the tree, they trigger a systemic wilting process.
