Description

Systematic position: Bursaphelenchus macromucronatus belongs to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is a microscopic, migratory endoparasitic nematode that relies on insect vectors, primarily wood-boring beetles, to transition between host trees.

Host plants: The pest primarily affects coniferous tree species, with a strong preference for the genus Pinus. It is known to colonize both healthy and stressed trees, though it thrives particularly well in weakened stands where defense mechanisms are compromised.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is inextricably linked with Monochamus beetle species. Nematodes in the third-stage juvenile form invade the trachea of the developing beetle within the wood. When the adult beetle emerges to feed on young pine shoots, the nematodes are introduced into the new host, where they rapidly multiply and migrate through the resin canals.

Damage and pathogenicity: Once established, the nematodes feed on the epithelial cells of the resin canals. This feeding behavior causes a rapid disruption of water transport and resin flow. The host tree experiences physiological wilt, characterized by needle discoloration and eventual death of the entire tree, often within a single season.

Control measures: Effective management relies on strict quarantine protocols to prevent the transport of infested timber. Field measures include:
