Bursaphelenchus michalskii

Bursaphelenchus michalskii

Description

Bursaphelenchus michalskii is a species of plant-parasitic and mycophagous nematode within the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is recognized as a forest pest primarily associated with the wood of coniferous trees and their associated insect vectors, typically bark and wood-boring beetles.

The host range of Bursaphelenchus michalskii includes various coniferous species such as pines (Pinus), spruces (Picea), and firs (Abies). It is predominantly found in weakened or dying trees where the environment is favorable for the growth of fungi, which serves as its primary food source, though it often co-exists with xylophagous insects.

The life cycle of this nematode is heavily dependent on phoresy, the process of hitchhiking on insect vectors. Nematode larvae in the third dispersal stage enter the bodies of cerambycid beetles. When these beetles feed on healthy twigs or wood, the nematodes exit the insect and enter the host tree, where they feed on fungi and reproduce rapidly within the sapwood and resin canals.

The damage caused by this nematode is both direct and indirect. By populating the wood in large numbers, the nematodes and their accompanying fungi disrupt the transport of water and nutrients within the tree. Symptoms include needles turning yellow, rapid wilting of branches, and ultimately the death of the tree, which is often exacerbated by the damage caused by the beetles themselves.

Management and control strategies for Bursaphelenchus michalskii focus on mitigating the spread of the vector and the nematode itself:

  • Sanitary logging to remove infested or dead timber from forest stands.
  • Implementation of strict phytosanitary regulations for the movement of coniferous logs.
  • Heat treatment (kiln drying) of wood products to eradicate nematodes and insects.
  • Monitoring beetle populations using attractant traps to reduce the risk of infestation.
