Description

The pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus mucronatus) belongs to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. This microscopic worm is a dangerous endoparasite that infests the vascular tissues of coniferous trees, leading to rapid wilting and the eventual death of the host plant.

The primary hosts of this pest are various species of the genus Pinus, including Scots pine. The nematode can also colonize spruce and larch trees, utilizing them as secondary reservoirs for reproduction, especially when the trees are already stressed by environmental factors or drought.

The biology of this pest is intimately linked to the sawyer beetles of the genus Monochamus, which act as the main vectors for transmission. As the beetles feed on young pine shoots, the nematodes migrate from the insect into the tree's resin canals. Once inside, they reproduce rapidly, feeding on the epithelial cells of the resin ducts and disrupting the water conduction system.

The typical symptoms of infection include a significant reduction in resin flow, yellowing and browning of the needles, and systemic wilting of the crown within a single growing season. While B. mucronatus is often considered less aggressive than its relative B. xylophilus, it remains a serious threat that can cause widespread mortality in vulnerable or weakened forest stands.
