Description
Bursaphelenchus pinasteri is a microscopic parasitic nematode belonging to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is recognized as a significant threat to pine forestry, sharing biological characteristics with other pathogenic nematodes that cause lethal wilting disease in various coniferous species.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include different species of the Pinus genus, with a particular affinity for maritime pine. The nematode colonizes the resin canals and xylem, feeding on epithelial cells, which eventually leads to the blockage of water transport and severe physiological decline of the host tree.
The life cycle of this nematode is obligately associated with cerambycid beetles of the genus Monochamus. Nematodes are transmitted when adult beetles feed on the shoots of healthy trees; the parasites migrate from the beetle into the tree tissue, where they multiply rapidly within the wood.
Damage symptoms manifest as rapid yellowing and browning of the needles, followed by a total cessation of resin flow. Trees exhibit symptoms of severe moisture stress and usually die within a single growing season once the population of nematodes reaches a critical threshold within the tree trunk.
Control strategies involve rigorous phytosanitary monitoring and strict regulation of timber trade to prevent the spread of the nematode. Integrated management focuses on the early detection and removal of infested trees, as well as silvicultural practices that aim to reduce the habitat of beetle vectors, thereby limiting the opportunities for nematode transmission.
