Bursaphelenchus pinophilus is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. This microscopic pest is recognized for its significant impact on the health and vitality of coniferous tree species, particularly those in the Pinus genus.

The host range is primarily limited to pine trees, where the nematodes inhabit the xylem and surrounding tissues. By colonizing the resin canals and vascular system, the parasite disrupts water transport, causing severe physiological stress and subsequent wilting of the affected coniferous host.

The life cycle of this species is phoretic, meaning it relies on wood-boring beetles of the genus Monochamus for dispersal. Nematodes reach the adult stage in the wood, then migrate to the beetle pupal chambers. They enter the bodies of the beetles, which then carry the nematodes to healthy trees during their maturation feeding phase on twigs.

Damage caused by B. pinophilus is characterized by a rapid decline in resin flow, chlorosis of needles, and rapid crown dieback. If left unmanaged, the infestation leads to the total mortality of the tree, creating a risk for surrounding healthy forests due to the potential for rapid spread facilitated by the beetle vectors.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing the transmission and establishment of the nematode:

  • strict quarantine regulations for timber movement across borders;
  • removal and destruction of infested trees during the dormant season;
  • application of heat treatment or chemical fumigation to wood products;
